Welcome in Mongolia and Ulaanbaatar

The beautiful country Mongolia is located in East Asia, although sometimes it is considered part of Central Asia. The country is bordered by China to the south and Russia to the north. Its capital and largest city is Ulaanbaatar.

Mongolia was in the thirteenth century the center of the Mongol Empire and was later ruled by the Chinese Qing dynasty until 1911, when with Russian assistance an independent government was formed.

After the fall of communism in Mongolia in 1990 the country adopted a new, democratic constitution which was ratified in 1992. This officially marked the transition of Mongolia to a democratic country, making it one of the world’s youngest democracies.

The majority of Mongolia's population follow the Tibetan Buddhism. There are also Shamanists, Christians, and Muslims.

The traditional Mongolian dwelling is known as a yurt, in Mongolian “ger”. Yurts and tents are seen as the basis for development of the traditional Mongolian architecture.
